Aim High. Finish Strong!

How well do you finish what you start?

Last week, I facilitated a meeting for partners building a complex, high-profile hospital. With significant schedule pressure and large financial penalties if they miss a year-end deadline, the partners recommitted to finish strong and deliver what they promised. Here are their agreements.

Aim high. Expect success. We rarely achieve more than we think is possible. We must believe if we expect to succeed.

Teamwork. We win together or lose together. Communicate clearly and directly. Walk in each other's boots. Lead with urgency, good judgement and positive intention.

Safety. Urgency does not mean frantic or unsafe. Be quick but don't hurry. Nothing is worth a life!

Quality. Deliver quality to contract specifications. Understand and commit to the completion sequence and performance testing. One punch-list!

Schedule. Make timely decisions that advance the project to completion. Be honest regarding the true state of readiness for occupancy.

Cost. Manage cost within the agreed budget and contingency. Recognize current funding constraints. Make responsible financial decisions.

The margin between the best and the rest is often quite slim. Play your best when it matters most.
